NW Center Employees in front of a building

Fostering Open Communication and Alignment with NW Center

In 1965, NW Center started an inclusion revolution. Since then, they have been at the forefront of disability inclusion and anti-ableism. Today, they provide wrap-around, disability-inclusive services “from the cradle through career.” Engrained in their company culture is the motto, “When people of all abilities learn and work together, everyone benefits.” It’s no surprise, then, that openness, inclusivity, and transparency are crucial to how they work.

Read our interview with NW Center to discover how, by documenting feedback and communication in one accessible place, you too can build more alignment at your organization.

NW Centers employee

Can you share a bit about NW Center’s mission and how effective communication and accountability play a role in achieving your goals?

Small Improvements has been a game changer!

The 1:1 Feature has allowed us to track projects, performance, and employee support over time, which has been really neat to watch!

Action Items are a gem – as an organization that seeks to create more inclusive spaces for folks of all abilities, having a space where we can see current and historical meeting notes all in one place has been incredibly supportive. During performance evaluations, these notes and action items are referred to often, as it has greatly improved our ability to log information in an easily accessible space.

Before using Small Improvements’ 1:1 feature, what challenges did your team face in aligning on projects and goals?

Prior to Small Improvements, our managers and their teams would mostly use paper and pencil to track notes, action items, and project goals. While that is successful for some, others struggled to manage the many differing locations of stored information and we found that some little details regularly slipped through the cracks.

Learning & Development

"We set goals every year, but after utilizing Small Improvements, tracking their progress and being able to check off benchmark achievements has really helped us move them forward"

How has the 1:1 feature helped foster more open communication between managers and team members at NW Center?

First that comes to mind is the ability to see all the notes, projects, documents, and action items in one location!

We also really love the platform’s ability to allow both participants to contribute to the meeting. Our employees will often set meetings (usually regular syncs) in advance to give both participants time to brainstorm talking points.

Having a space to add private points has been a major success as well, as our employees have shared it gives them time to gather courage to share more crunchy feedback, and also provides the space to decide when the best time to share it may be.

What are some key metrics or outcomes you’ve observed since implementing the 1:1 feature for managing projects and goals?

We set goals every year, but after utilizing Small Improvements, tracking their progress and being able to check off benchmark achievements has really helped us move them forward more efficiently and comfortably for both managers and employees.

How does the 1:1 feature align with NW Center’s broader strategies for growth and team collaboration?

Small Improvements has become a focal point for tracking 1:1 meetings, whether between managers/employees or peers! It has allowed us to expand not only our team communication but also expand and network with other teams and other departments.
